N0. 223 CIW CHAPTER 12 MISSOURI MATHEWS’ CONFEDERATE GUERRILLA COMMAND

Commander: John Mathews

In June 1861, he drove out a Jesuit priest at the Osage Mission in southeastern Kansas. Mathews was a Kansas Indian trader who led a party of Missourians and Indians on September 8, 1861 and raided Humboldt, Kansas, taking property but not killing or burning. The Union army hunted Mathews down and killed him outside Chetopa, Kansas.
