N0. 281 CIW CHAPTER 15 TENNESSEE 1ST CONFEDERATE PARTISAN RANGERS (12TH CAVALRY REGIMENT). IT WAS BROKEN UP IN 1865. SOME MEMBERS JOINED THE 3RD CAVALRY (FORREST’S OLD CAVALRY)

Commanding officer: Colonel Robert V. Richardson

This regiment consisted of Lt. Colonel Aaron Burrow’s Tennessee Cavalry Battalion (State Troops) which was raised in Tennessee in the summer of 1862. Burrow was killed in August or September, 1862. In October, 1862, five companies were organized as Partisan Rangers. It was raised to a partisan ranger regiment in February, 1863, and later became 12th Tennessee Cavalry Regiment, not to be confused with the 12th (Day’s) Tennessee Cavalry Battalion (see below).

Some of the original captains were Reuben Burrow, John U. Green, James H. Murray, Ed Daly, and James H. Hazlewood.
