Cox’s Tennessee Cavalry Battalion

Commander: Major Nicholas N. Cox

The battalion was organized in October 1862 as a battalion of partisan rangers and mustered into Confederate service in December, 1862. It consolidated with Napier’s battalion to form 10th Tennessee Cavalry Regiment (see above). Cox was authorized by Governor Harris to organize this partisan ranger battalion. No muster rolls exist of the battalion. Existing information is from the rolls of the 10th Tennessee Cavalry Regiment. The battalion operated along the East bank of the Tennessee River, between the mouth of Duck River, and Savannah, TN. The battalion served with General N.B. Forrest. Major Cox was captured at Parker’s Cross Roads on December 28, 1862, with 300 of his men.
