Commanding officer: Major Duncan B. Cooper
Cooper seems to have organized a company of partisan rangers in the fall of 1862. Later he was commissioned major in the Conscript Bureau and authorized by General Pillow to raise a regiment in Middle Tennessee inside Federal lines in the fall of 1863. He was captured in February, 1864, and the battalion broken up and transferred to General Forrest’s forces.
No muster rolls exist. Union sources describe Cooper as “the noted guerrilla chief” and his men as “companies of Bushwackers”.
Among the officers were Jackson D. Chaffin, Joseph Foster and George H. Grimes. Unionists seem to have been particularly upset over Captains F.P. Scot’s and Captain Kelly’s companies, Scot with Lieutenants W.J. Boswell, Flatt and Chaffin.
