N0. 296 CIW CHAPTER 15 TENNESSEE MCCANN’S CONFEDERATE CAVALRY BATTALION

Commanding officer: Major J. Richard McCann.

He was a former infantry officer.

The battalion was organized as a Partisan Ranger unit in the summer of 1862. It was to operate within the enemy´s lines for the purpose of procuring information on Union movements, interrupting communications and to create divisions of his enemy forces. Some companies of the battalion took part in Morgan´s Kentucky raid in the summer of 1862. The unit operated with General Wheeler and in the expedition to the lower Cumberland in 1863. McCann later became Major of the 9th Tennessee Cavalry regiment operating with Morgan on his raid into Indiana and Ohio.
