Later unit was organized as a battalion of Partisan Rangers operating behind Union lines between the Cumberland and Tennessee Rivers from 1862 to 1865. 1. Stewart Cruickshank says:

Sir: I am compelled to correct you! Alexander Duvall McNairy originally served as 3rd LT. in Company B, ‘the Sewanee Rifles” 20th Regiment Tennessee Infantry. He was not re-elected in the reorginazation in May 1862.He joined Henon Cross & James McLaughlin of Nashville and went
to Hickman County where they organized a P.R.company. Henon Cross was Captain, James McLaughlin was 1st LT. Brownlee Cross was 2nd LT. and Alexander Duvall McNairy was 3rd Lt.On various expeditions the command structure changed making each a “Captain”. Brownlee Cross was seriously wounded in December of 1864. When McNairy commanded they operated between the Cumbeland and Tennessee Rivers primarily against the Military Nashville & Northwestern Railroad from 1862-1865. Sometimes they joined the partisan company of David Miller. Thier main foes were the Perry County Jayhawkers,.2nd Tennessee Mounted Infantry and the 12th Tennessee Cavalry Regiment Federal Army. They surrendered 8 officers and 45 men near Franklin Tennessee May 18,1865. McNairy’s name and rank were often confusing to reports in the newspapers and to the Federal Army.

Naturally many of the contributions on the blog can be improved. It is my intention, with your permission, to add the information above the text on Duval’s Confederate guerrilla command.

Further contributions to the texts published on this blog are highly appreciated.

      Gratefully
