Commander: Captain Champ (ion) Ferguson

The guerrilla command operated along the Kentucky-Tennessee border in the Cumberland Mountains.

Ferguson was born in 1821 near Albany, Clinton County, Kentucky. Little is known about his life before the war. He probably led the usual life of a mountaineer farmer in the Cumberland Mountains.

Ferguson´s command began operating in the fall of 1861 and continued until May 1865. Ferguson and his comrades sometimes acted as scouts for the troops of Generals Morgan and Wheeler.

In July 1865 Ferguson was put on trial accused of being a guerrilla and for having murdered 53 persons. Declared guilty and sentenced to death he was executed in Nashville, Tennessee, on 20 October, 1865.
