Commanding officer: Colonel James Duff (1828 – ?)

The 14th Battalion was used as nucleus when the 33rd Cavalry Regiment was formed in April 1863. Duff had come to Texas from Scotland before the war. The unit was commanded to the Texas Hill Country because of Unionism there in May, 1862. Duff declared martial law in Kerr and Gillespie counties. The unit pursued a battalion of Germans who had enlisted for the Union and defeated it in the battle of the Nueces on August 10, 1862.

Later the unit was expanded to a cavalry regiment and served on the Texas coast for the remainder of the war.
