Commanding officer: Lt. Colonel Vincent A. Witcher
He was an attorney in Western Virginia before the war. The battalion consisted of men from all counties in Southwestern Virgina. Witcher was cited for gallantry. Court-martialed for being AWOL and found guilty but later reinstated. After the war he was attorney in Pittsylvania County, Virgina, and passed away in 1912.
The battalion was organized in June 1862 and completed its organization in December that year. The battalion consisted of ten companies, of which one was designated a Partisan Ranger company (Co. C, Mc Dowell Partisan Rangers (formerly Captain Elias V. Harman’s Co. Virginia Volunteers). It served irregularly in southwestern Virginia and eastern Tennessee.
