N0. 340 CIW CHAPTER 17 VIRGINIA 36TH CONFEDERATE BATTALION CAVALRY

Commanding officer: Major James W. Sweeney, 1864 – 1865

The battalion was organized in February, 1863, with four companies, A to D. Later the number of companies was raised to five. After Gettysburg it took part in irregular operations in East Tennessee. It served with Early in Shenandoah Valley. It disbanded after cutting through the lines at Appomatox in 1865.
