N0. 351 CIW CHAPTER 17 VIRGINIA SMITH’S CONFEDERATE IRREGULAR CAVALRY BATTALION

Commanding officer: Major William “Rebel Bill” S. Smith

Smith started his military career as private of Company K, 8th Virginia Cavalry (see above). He served in that unit until mid-1862.

He was briefly with the Virginia State Line. Later he formed Company D of the 2nd Battalion Kentucky Mounted Riflemen in August 1862. He resigned in July 1864 to form this unit with five companies.
